While many Floridians spent this past Fourth of July partaking in the typical holiday festivities like going to cookouts and watching fireworks, one 18-year-old boy from Ormond Beach, Florida, spent his Independence Day committing attempted murder. The Volusia Sheriff’s Office reported on Friday, July 6, that officers had responded to a call about several shots being fired at a “vehicle full of people” late on Thursday, July 4. The victims stated that someone had shot at them multiple times at 1062 George Anderson Street in Ormond Beach. While no one was injured, once on scene, deputies found that the bullet holes in the vehicle were approximately at the head and chest height of the vehicle’s occupants. According to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office, the victims “narrowly missed being struck”. Dylan Preis, born in 2005, was identified by detectives as the shooter and arrested. He initially denied any involvement in the shooting, but he had recently had “a falling out with the driver” of the vehicle. Eventually, Preis did confess that he was the shooter and that he had used his grandmother’s nine millimeter handgun. The gun, ammunition, and shell casings were recovered at the crime scene. Preis was charged with four counts of firing into a vehicle, three counts of aggravated assault with a firearm, one count of attempted first-degree murder, one count of criminal mischief, and the violation of his juvenile probation. As of July 6, he was being held at Volusia County Branch Jail with no bond set. Article by Ema Tibbetts
