11/25/2024 0 Comments 525,000 Gallons of Partially Treated Wastewater Released in Bradenton Due to Operator ErrorThe Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has issued an updated pollution notice following a chlorine disinfection violation at the City of Bradenton Wastewater Reclamation Facility (WRF). The incident, reported on November 22, 2024, involved the release of approximately 525,000 gallons of partially treated wastewater due to operator error. The event occurred on November 21, 2024, between 6:28p.m. and 9:38p.m., during a period of high chlorine demand caused by a backwash procedure. According to DEP records, the operator on duty reacted incorrectly, allowing chlorine levels in contact chamber #2 to fall below the required 1.0 mg/L, rendering the wastewater insufficiently disinfected before being released to outfall D-001. Outfall is described as "the place where a river, drain, or sewer empties into the sea, a river, or a lake." The issue was identified and corrected by the incoming operator, who restored the facility’s bleach system to automatic operation. In response to the incident, the facility's Acting Superintendent and Chief Operator developed a troubleshooting standard operating procedure (SOP) to address similar situations in the future. Additionally, the city has engaged Jacob’s Engineering to provide comprehensive on-the-job training for all operators, aiming to establish consistent protocols and knowledge across the team. The violation occurred at the Bradenton WRF, located at 1810 1st Street West, Bradenton, Florida. The impacted area is within Manatee County. Compliance Coordinator Annah Jensen reported the incident to the DEP and can be reached at (941) 708-6300 or via email at [email protected]. The DEP encourages the public to stay informed about pollution incidents in Florida. For more details or to manage pollution notification subscriptions, visit the Public Notice of Pollution portal.
