On October 8, 2024, the Department of Commerce and NOAA announced $15.3 million in funding to support NOAA and its partners in developing reliable climate projection tools and services for the public. This funding, made possible through the Inflation Reduction Act, is aimed at meeting the growing demand for long-term, transparent climate information related to extreme weather. “This investment, made possible thanks to President Biden’s historic Inflation Reduction Act, will develop new information services to help communities better prepare for the impacts of extreme weather and climate disasters brought on by climate change,” said U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo. “[This will ensure] that families and communities across the country stay safe as we continue to mitigate the rising challenges from the climate crisis.” NOAA plays a crucial role in providing reliable climate data that helps inform decisions regarding infrastructure, energy systems, and financial investments that will impact future generations. With this funding, NOAA aims to enhance multi-decadal climate projections, focusing on risks such as heavy rainfall, temperature extremes, drought, and coastal flooding. The goal is to provide users with clear, trustworthy information on how these risks may evolve in the future. According to the press release, researchers will work closely with decision-makers across various sectors, including those concerned with western water resources, heat waves, coastal flooding, wildfires, and extreme winds. One key collaborator in this effort is the American Society of Civil Engineers, which will help co-develop climate services tailored to specific needs. “With this investment, NOAA and our partners are working directly with diverse end-user groups to co-develop climate services tailored to specific needs such as addressing coastal inundation, extreme heat, wildfires and other climate impacts,” said Jainey K. Bavishi, assistant secretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere and deputy NOAA administrator. “The climate services that will be produced by this research are crucial for community resilience across the country.” You can find out more and read the full press release here.
