The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a warning for pool owners across the United States to take action to keep raccoons away from their pools. This advisory follows the discovery that raccoon feces can contain Baylisascaris procyonis eggs, a dangerous worm that can cause severe illness in humans. Raccoons infected with Baylisascaris procyonis are prevalent throughout the United States. The worm's eggs, found in raccoon poop, can spread to humans through ingestion, posing a particular risk to young children and individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities who are more likely to put contaminated objects into their mouths. According to the CDC's page on Baylisascaris procyonis, it is a type of roundworm that can infect human eyes, organs, and/or the brain. The incubation period is usually 1 – 4 weeks and signs and symptoms can include nausea, tiredness, liver enlargement, loss of coordination, lack of attention to people and surroundings, loss of muscle control, blindness, and coma. Precautionary Measures: Pool owners are urged to be vigilant and take the following steps if raccoon poop or a dead raccoon is found in the pool:
