After DeSantis announced that he has increased the number of bonuses for police recruits on November 22, he is now increasing the state’s investment into the military. In a press release dated November 26, Governor Ron DeSantis’ official website posted that he has allotted for over $2.1 million more to go into the “military-supporting infrastructure through the Defense Reinvestment Grant Program” in Florida. This program is described as providing “grants to support infrastructure projects and economic growth in Florida’s military communities”. It is administered by FloridaCommerce. Since 2019, almost $6.3 million has been awarded to Florida’s military communities through this program. Eligible applicants are defined as “defense-dependent local governments and local economic development councils representing a local government with a military installation that could be adversely affected by federal actions”. The press release also specified 11 awards available through this program. Each one ranged from $85,353 to $250,000. Some were for specific cities, like Orlando; others were for counties, and one was for “Florida’s Space Coast”. Secretary of Commerce J. Alex Kelly stated that this initiative is a continuation of support for “critical projects that further strengthen military readiness. These awards will have impacts across the state, building on past investments and further cementing the bond between our defense communities and military installations.” DeSantis commented, “Florida is committed to investing in our military’s capacity and in military communities. These funds continue my mission of making Florida the most military-friendly and veteran-friendly state in the nation”. Article by Ema Tibbetts
