Vacation rental owners within Sarasota city limits are being urged to register their properties by October 31 to avoid incurring late fees. The City of Sarasota has set a final deadline for vacation rental registration on December 31. From January 1, 2025, operating a vacation rental without the necessary certificate will be a breach of City Code. This registration requirement affects single, two, three, and four-family dwellings operating as vacation rentals in Residential Single and Multi-Family Zoning Districts. Notably, owner-occupied vacation rentals, condominiums, cooperatives, and properties rented for 30 days or more are exempt from this requirement. The registration expansion was approved on February 5, 2024, through Ordinance 24-5506, extending the mandate from the barrier islands to the mainland. Currently, about 140 properties are registered on the barrier islands, with an additional 650 properties expected to register on the mainland. Owners can register their properties online or in person at 1575 2nd Street, Third Floor. For those uncertain about the need for a registration certificate, inquiries can be directed to [email protected] or by calling 941-263-6623. The City of Sarasota advises all vacation rental owners to review the guidelines on the city's vacation rental webpage and to seek assistance from city staff during the application process
