Florida Attorney General Targets Companies Fueling Robocall Scams

Are you tired of being interrupted by scam calls promising fake auto warranties, pretending to be the IRS, or offering bogus cable discounts? Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody is taking a stand against voice service providers enabling these relentless robocalls to flood Floridians’ phones, according to a press release posted today.

The release notes that Attorney General Moody issued warnings to four companies accused of transmitting millions of suspected illegal robocalls. These warnings, part of the work by the Anti-Robocall Multistate Litigation Task Force, also inform the companies that the findings have been shared with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), which will consider further action.

""As part of our Anti-Robocall Multistate Litigation Task Force, we have been investigating several voice service providers and have concerns about companies that are allowing millions of scam robocalls to ring through to Americans’ phones." said Attorney General Moody. "We’re putting these companies on notice that their actions may violate state and federal consumer protection and telemarketing laws."

The companies receiving warnings include:

• KWK Communications, Inc.: Allegedly transmitted more than 8.7 million calls with invalid caller ID numbers in just one month in 2022, including IRS and Social Security scams.
• Inbound Inc.: Reportedly routed 28.4 million DirecTV and cable-discount robocalls in a single month, despite previous cease-and-desist demands from the Federal Trade Commission.
• AKA Management, Inc.: Allegedly handled about 12.1 million Amazon and Apple imposter scam calls in a single month.
• CallVox LLC: Reportedly facilitated thousands of calls to individuals on the Do Not Call List using illegally-spoofed numbers.

The task force, consisting of 51 bipartisan attorneys general, is dedicated to holding these companies accountable for violating state and federal telemarketing laws. The warning letters make it clear that if these providers continue to allow illegal robocalls, they may face legal consequences.

Floridians have long voiced frustration with scam calls that disrupt daily life and target vulnerable individuals. This action is part of Attorney General Moody’s broader efforts to reduce robocalls and protect consumers.

Recent actions by Moody’s office include lawsuits against other voice service providers, such as Avid Telecom and Smartbiz Telecom, for enabling billions of illegal robocalls.
