Florida Boaters Advised to Take Immediate Action as Severe Weather Approaches

Governor Ron DeSantis has declared a state of emergency in 41 Florida counties as Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine threatens the state. The storm is expected to bring widespread impacts, including storm surge, coastal flooding, heavy rain, and damaging winds. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is advising boat owners to take immediate action to prepare their vessels for the storm.

Key Preparation Tips for Boaters:

• Relocate if Possible: If your boat can be trailered, move it inland away from tidal waters. For those at anchor or in a marina, double your lines, secure with extra anchors, and remove loose items like life jackets and electronics.
• Protect Your Boat: Use fenders to prevent damage, cover lines to reduce chafing, and charge batteries to ensure bilge pumps run throughout the storm.
• Do Not Stay Onboard: Venturing out in rough conditions is highly dangerous. FWC reminds boaters that safety comes first—do not risk your life or that of potential rescuers.

After the Storm:

• Report damaged or abandoned boats and missing waterway markers to law enforcement or FWC.
• Check if your marina qualifies for disaster relief through the SBA.
