Stargazers in Florida are in for a celestial treat this October with two spectacular events set to light up the night sky: the Super Hunter’s Moon, also sometimes refered to as a "Blood Moon" or "Sanguine Moon", and the Orionid Meteor Shower. Super Hunter’s Moon – October 17, 2024 On October 17, the second and final Super Full Moon of the year will appear, officially known as the Hunter’s Moon. The October Full Moon is called the Hunter’s Moon in the Northern Hemisphere, as it historically marked a time when people hunted and preserved meats in preparation for winter. As a Super Moon, it will appear larger and brighter than usual, making it a perfect opportunity for skywatchers and photographers alike to capture the beauty of this rare event. Orionid Meteor Shower – October 20-21, 2024 Just a few days later, from October 20-21, the Orionid Meteor Shower will peak. Known for its fast-moving meteors, the Orionids are remnants of Halley’s Comet and can produce up to 20 meteors per hour at its peak. The shower will remain active from October 2 through November 7, giving viewers several chances to catch the dazzling display. For those interested in capturing these celestial moments, be sure to find a dark spot away from city lights, and enjoy the natural beauty the Florida skies have to offer.
