11/8/2024 0 Comments Heading to the Beach This Weekend? Respiratory Issues Reported Along Florida's Gulf CoastIf you are planning a beach trip this weekend, be aware that respiratory issues have been reported along Florida’s Gulf Coast due to the presence of red tide. Over the past week, people visiting popular beaches in Pinellas, Sarasota, Charlotte, and Lee counties experienced symptoms such as coughing and throat irritation, likely caused by the toxic algae Karenia brevis. Though bloom concentrations were not high enough to reach dangerous levels, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) confirmed that K. brevis was detected in 56 samples across the coast, leading to respiratory discomfort in some areas. Health officials are advising beachgoers to stay informed and take precautions, especially if they notice irritation while near the water. The red tide, which releases harmful neurotoxins, can become airborne and affect people even in areas where water samples show only low concentrations. Local authorities reported fish kills in several counties, a common sign of red tide activity, but the most immediate concern for beach visitors this weekend is respiratory irritation. Those with preexisting conditions like asthma are particularly vulnerable. FWC’s forecast predicts surface water movement toward the west and northwest, and while further offshore sampling is expected to provide more information, recent weather has hindered monitoring efforts. Meanwhile, residents and visitors are encouraged to check the FWC’s Red Tide Current Status page for real-time updates and avoid beaches where symptoms are reported.
