11/12/2024 0 Comments Holiday Travel Alert: Florida Officials Warn of Dangerous Roads, Urge Safety ChecksAs November ushers in the end of hurricane season and the start of holiday celebrations, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV), alongside the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) and other safety partners, are issuing a grave reminder to all drivers: this holiday season, your life and the lives of others are at stake every time you hit the road. With millions of people expected to flood Florida's highways over the next two months, the joy of gathering with loved ones can turn into tragedy in the blink of an eye. In 2023, over 7,300 crashes occurred during Thanksgiving week alone, with 43 lives tragically lost during just five days. The deadliest day? The Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Florida officials are sounding the alarm, urging everyone to take responsibility behind the wheel, especially during the holidays. “To ensure that everyone arrives safely at their destination, those planning to travel should take precautions and check their vehicles before embarking on long journeys. Once behind the wheel, drivers should remain patient, calm, focused, and unimpaired," said Executive Director Dave Kerner. As we enter the busiest travel days of the year, Florida’s highways could become battlegrounds of impatience, distraction, and deadly mistakes. The FLHSMV is launching a campaign with life-saving tips to keep drivers vigilant, ensuring that celebrations are not overshadowed by preventable tragedies. "Traveling safely this holiday season is a choice and a personal responsibility," said FHP Colonel Gary Howze II. "Drive carefully on Florida roads, stay alert and be courteous. Remember, life is about the journey as much as the destination. Let's ensure every journey ends with joyful memories this season. Arrive Alive Florida!" Florida law enforcement officers will be cracking down on reckless driving, impaired drivers, and those who choose to disregard traffic laws. "Florida’s Sheriffs urge every driver to be courteous, stay sober, and stay focused on the road and your surroundings. Our loved ones count on us to make it home safely. Together, we can ensure safer roads, not only during the holidays but throughout the year," said Florida Sheriffs Association President Bill Prummell. This holiday season, do not let your festive plans turn into a nightmare. Officials are reminding everyone that safety on our roads is the greatest gift we can give one another. Slow down, avoid distractions, and make safe choices behind the wheel. For life-saving travel tips and updates, visit the FLHSMV Safe Holiday Travel webpage.
