The community of Spring Hill is mourning the loss of a local icon, affectionately known as Tom the Turkey, who was a familiar sight on the corner of Spring Hill Drive and Anderson Snow Road. The news of his tragic passing has deeply saddened residents, prompting a heartfelt response from those who loved and admired him. Ashley Cassell, a local business owner and member of the Spring Hill Neighbors group on Facebook, shared the news and announced that she has erected a memorial in his honor. The tribute to Tom is located in front of the Walgreens on Anderson Snow Road, where fans have gathered to pay their respects. "I recently moved back to the Hernando county area, and icons like Tom are what I love most. The small town charm we have between dinosaur statues and live mermaids are what makes us unique, it gives us character. I know we recently rebranded from the Nature Coast to the Adventure Coast, but the nature and animals are still very much a part of this growing community. Tom was the intersection, he was a silly turkey, but he brought a lot of people joy just exploring the land as it developed, and I believe that his life was important and he should be celebrated," Cassell told Uncovering Florida. Ashley's memorial reads: "In Loving Memory of Tom the Turkey Gobble No More Tom, our feathery friend, you’ve winged your way into our hearts and drumsticks forever. You lived life on the fly, strutting with pride. You weren’t just any bird; you were the cream of the crop, the stuffing of our lives. Though you’ve gobbled your last and taken your final flight, your memory will not be left behind. We'll remember your fowl play, whether it was at the Walgreens, Neighborhood Walmart, Rookies, gas station, or Yellow Lemon. Tom, you will always be our feathered favorite. Rest in peace, Tom. You’ve finally quit cold turkey and found eternal rest. Forever Feathered, Never Forgotten. 6,000 candles in the wind. 🕯🦃✝️" As evidenced by the dozens of comments on the post, Tom the Turkey was a beloved figure in Spring Hill, known for his frequent visits to local establishments, where his presence brought smiles and laughter to many. "Thanks for chasing my car and always giving the kids a good laugh," said one Facebook commenter who also provided a video. Other commenters noted that Tom's untimely demise was the result of a vehicle strike. The heartfelt tribute from Cassell and the community speaks to the impact Tom had on the lives of those who encountered him. His strutting pride and playful antics will be missed, but his memory will live on in the hearts of Spring Hill residents. You can read about and pay your respects to Tom on the Facebook post here.
