The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) recently completed the purchase of a 1,361-acre property as part of the Yarborough Ranch Florida Forever Project. Located in southeastern Seminole County, this acquisition strengthens the connection between the Florida Wildlife Corridor and existing conservation lands, including the Little Big Econ State Forest. “Adding to our network of conservation lands is always an occasion to celebrate,” said DEP Secretary Shawn Hamilton. “Purchases like Yarborough Ranch will benefit our residents, visitors and wildlife by providing improved water quality, species habitat and recreational opportunities.” The newly acquired land lies almost entirely within the Geneva Freshwater Lens, a vital drinking water source for the county. By conserving this area, DEP helps protect this crucial hydrologic resource, preserves the health of the local ecosystem, and prevents further development. Managed by the Florida Forest Service, this area will be part of the Little Big Econ State Forest, offering activities like hiking, canoeing, horseback riding, and wildlife viewing during daylight hours. Governor Ron DeSantis and the Florida Cabinet approved this acquisition in a previous meeting. The Florida Forever Program has been established to conserve land that provides environmental, recreational, and preservation benefits, including water quality safeguards, storm resilience, and habitat protection. Since 2019, Florida has dedicated over $1.4 billion to the Florida Forever program, with $950 million specifically allocated to the Florida Wildlife Corridor. This funding has allowed DEP to conserve over 270,000 acres, with 91% of those acres located within the Florida Wildlife Corridor.
