Maybe criminals should consider the story of 25-year-old Gustavo Adolfo Alvarado Mireles’ arrest as a cautionary tale on how not to flee from the cops. Mireles’ arrest affidavit and a post on the official Facebook page for the Martin County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) details his arrest. According to Mireles’ arrest affidavit, just before 12:30 p.m. on Friday, November 1, police received a tip over the phone saying that Mireles was “wanted in Okeechobee County for shooting into his father’s home with a firearm”. The caller also said that Mireles was driving a black Jaguar near the railroad tracks in Booker Park and advised police that he would likely be armed. Multiple units were dispatched to search for Mireles, and Martin County deputies soon spotted a car that matched the caller’s description parked on the sidewalk outside of Juicy’s Nightclub in Indiantown, Florida. They also noticed that a Hispanic male was sitting in the driver’s seat. When the deputies pulled up behind the vehicle to see the tag, the driver chose to flee. Police engaged the driver in a high-speed chase that was quickly cut short when the car “rolled over and crashed into a fence and an FPL light pole”. The affidavit estimates that the damages from this crash totaled about $25,000. The driver, later identified as Mireles, proceeded to get out of the car and take off into the woods on foot. Several deputies pursued him and reportedly commanded him to stop, but he ignored them and continued to flee. Deputies managed to catch him after a short pursuit, but Mireles was still resisting arrest. It took multiple officers to get him under control. One of the detaining officers also spotted Mireles’ loaded gun near where he had been caught, and it was collected as evidence. Mireles was evaluated on site by the Martin County Fire Rescue. Then, he was transported to Cleveland Clinic South to be treated from his injuries due to the crash. Once he was cleared, he was taken to Martin County Jail. When police searched the black Jaguar, they found “two small clear plastic bags containing a white powdery substance”. This powder was later confirmed to be cocaine. Mireles was ultimately arrested on around nine charges. His preexisting charges in Okeechobee County included grand theft of a motor vehicle, resisting arrest, possessing the ID of another person, driving with a revoked license, and armed burglary. His new charges in Martin County included fleeing and eluding, driving with a suspended license, drug possession, and resisting arrest without violence. Martin County police are requesting that no bond is set until Mireles’ first court appearance. Investigations into Mireles’ crimes are ongoing. No further details are available at this time. The MCSO posted a short video clip that includes body camera footage of Mireles' arrest. Click here to view it. To read the full affidavit, click here. Mireles’ arrest is described on pages 92-96.
