A former track and field athlete has been sentenced to 20 years in federal prison for firearms offenses, including attempting to shoot a victim on his front porch and confronting a tow truck driver with a firearm just a week later. On January 3, U.S. District Court Judge David S. Leibowitz handed down the 240-month sentence, which included an upward variance of 105 months, to 28-year-old Olivier Ricardy Alexandre. Alexandre had previously pled guilty to a two-count indictment charging him with possession of ammunition by a convicted felon and possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon. The charges stem from two violent incidents in Miami-Dade County. On March 13, 2023, less than a month after being sentenced to probation in Warren County, Kentucky, on felony marijuana trafficking charges, Alexandre fired at least 18 rounds of ammunition at a victim who was entering his home after work. The Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD) Forensic Services Division later connected shell casings from this shooting to three other incidents in Miami-Dade County, including an October 9, 2022, shooting involving the same victim and firearm. Just eight days after the March 13 attack, Alexandre was involved in another confrontation. On March 21, 2023, as officers from the Plantation Police Department prepared to execute a search warrant at his home, Alexandre emerged and brandished a handgun equipped with an extended drum magazine at a tow truck driver repossessing a vehicle. He was immediately arrested. The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), the U.S. Postal Inspection Service (USPIS), and the Miami-Dade Police Department, with assistance from the Plantation Police Department and the Broward Sheriff’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Hayden P. O’Byrne prosecuted the case. This prosecution is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a nationwide initiative aimed at reducing gun violence and other violent crimes.
