In a groundbreaking move to bolster safety in school zones, the Miami-Dade County Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTPW) announced today the launch of the RedSpeed Photo Enforcement System for the 2024/2025 school year. This initiative aims to raise public awareness and enhance safety for children in school zones. The first installations are now live at several key locations, including:
“This initiative is essential for keeping our residents, especially our youngest, safe in and around schools,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “By enforcing speed limits near school zones, Miami-Dade County is taking proactive measures to protect our kids and encourage safe driving.” The program has identified 206 school zones in the unincorporated areas of Miami-Dade. While state law permits cities to adopt similar systems, several have already begun this process. The first cameras were activated on Monday, November 4, 2024. For the first month, drivers caught exceeding the speed limit by 10 miles per hour or more will receive warnings. After that, violators will face a $100 citation. “Creating safer school zones starts with addressing speed, which is one of the largest causes of injury and death in traffic collisions,” said Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners Vice Chairman Anthony Rodriguez. “I am proud to see that our County has launched this tool to help keep our school children safer. At the same time, I ask drivers to always be vigilant in and around school zones to help prevent serious accidents and save lives. Together, we can make our roadways safer for all.” This initiative aligns with the County’s Vision Zero strategy, which aims to eliminate traffic fatalities and severe injuries by 2040. The new enforcement system is expected to significantly reduce accidents, enhance public health, and improve road safety by curbing speeding in school zones. “Implementing this speed photo enforcement system is a key component of aligning with our Vision Zero strategy,” said Eulois Cleckley, Director and CEO of DTPW. “We are fully committed to making our roads safer for everyone, especially our children.” For further information and updates, visit www.miamidade.gov/global/transportation.
