In May 2024, detectives from the Polk County Sheriff's Office Agricultural Crimes team arrested 43-year-old Jimmy Lee Taylor of Lake Wales on charges of animal abuse. Taylor's dog, Slim, was discovered in dire condition so detectives intervened, removing the dog from the abusive environment and transporting him to Polk County Animal Control.
"Slim was in awful shape when we found him. He was dirty and underweight and just miserable, and we knew we had to save him from his situation or he wouldn’t live much longer," said the department on their Facebook page. Once in care, Slim’s health dramatically improved. Within three months, the pup gained 30 pounds and received much-needed attention and care. The Polk County Bully Project, one of the county’s main partners in rehabilitating large breed dogs, stepped in to help with Slim's recovery. Now healthy and thriving--and looking like a totally different dog--Slim is currently available for adoption through the Bully Project.
