The Polk County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of 32-year-old Deputy Gregory Maynard, who was found with a fatal gunshot wound at his Davenport home late Sunday night. Deputies responded to Maynard’s residence around 10:08 p.m. on December 15, 2024. Upon arrival, they discovered him in his bedroom with a single gunshot wound to his head. Two others—a woman and a child—were present in the home at the time of the incident but did not directly witness the shooting. Preliminary evidence and initial interviews indicate that Maynard’s death was the result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. However, the official cause and manner of death will be determined by the Medical Examiner’s Office. Maynard, a dual-certified deputy sheriff, joined the agency in 2015 as a detention deputy before transitioning to a deputy sheriff role in January 2017. Most recently, he served on the Central District patrol team. He was not married and had no dependents. “Deputy Maynard’s death is such a tragedy,” said Sheriff Grady Judd. “Our thoughts, prayers, and support are with his family, friends, and coworkers. We are making sure Greg’s coworkers have access to both peer and professional counseling. I encourage anyone who may have feelings of self-harm to reach out for help. Florida operates an outstanding Suicide Prevention Lifeline—call or text 988 or reach out through chat by visiting 988lifeline.org/chat.” The Sheriff’s Office also expressed its grief publicly, posting a heartfelt message on Facebook: “Today we are mourning the tragic and sudden loss of 32-year-old Gregory Maynard, a dual-certified deputy sheriff who died at his home yesterday. Please keep his family and friends in your prayers.” If you or someone you know is struggling, help is available 24/7 through the Suicide Prevention Lifeline by calling or texting 988, or by visiting 988lifeline.org/chat. Deputy Maynard’s colleagues and loved ones are being offered access to counseling as they cope with this profound loss. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office asks the community to join them in keeping Maynard’s family, friends, and coworkers in their thoughts during this difficult time.
