The people who care most about Social Security and Medicare are arguably the ones who are currently relying on both: retirees. So, it makes sense that the Florida Alliance for Retired Americans (FLARA) endorsed the candidate for senate that the organization believed would best uphold those programs. As such, FLARA endorsed Debbie Mucarsel-Powell over Rick Scott earlier this month. On September 20, 2024, Debbie Mucarsel-Powell posted a press release to her official campaign website to officially announce the FLARA endorsement to replace Rick Scott in representing Florida as a senator. Mucarsel-Powell’s press release claims that President of FLARA Felicia Bruce stated her belief that, like FLARA, Mucarsel-Powell “is committed to protecting Social Security and Medicare at the national level”. The press release also quoted Bruce saying that Mucarsel-Powell’s “record while in Congress demonstrated unequivocal commitment to do what is best for aging Americans...She has a proven voting record of supporting every issue that would help both seniors and the middle class”. In response to the endorsement, Mucarsel-Powell said, “I am proud to have earned the support of [FLARA] in our fight to retire Rick Scott, who literally wrote the plan to eliminate Social Security and Medicare…While I wrote the bill in Congress to expand Medicare coverage, Rick Scott would leave thousands of families uninsured and push our seniors into poverty. Together, we will hold him accountable in November and ensure that Floridians all over the state can retire with dignity”. Including FLARA’s endorsement, Mucarsel-Powell’s website shows that she now has the approval of over 27 different organizations. Others include Planned Parenthood, Moms Fed Up, Reproductive Freedom For All, and Moms Demand Action. Article by Ema Tibbetts
