People love Florida, and for good reason. With its abundant sunshine, stunning beaches, and rich history, this state is nothing short of unique. However, with all good must be some bad. Here are 10 unsettling facts you wish you did not know about Florida (scroll to the bottom for a video). Number 1: Skin Cancer Beneath Florida's radiant skies lies a sobering truth: it ranks as the "Sunshine State" with a shadow. According to the National Institutes of Health, Florida has the second-highest incidence of melanoma in the United States. Despite its sun-kissed allure, the state's abundant sunlight and high UV index poses a formidable risk to its residents and visitors alike. Number 2: Lightning Strikes Florida is renowned for its frequent thunderstorms, earning it the title of the "Lightning Capital of the United States." With an average of over 1.2 million lightning strikes per year, it's no surprise that Florida leads the nation in lightning-related injuries and fatalities. The chances of being struck by lightning in Florida are significantly higher compared to other states, making it crucial for residents and visitors alike to take caution during stormy weather. Number 3: Great White Sharks Contrary to popular belief, Florida's coastal waters are home to various shark species, including the notorious great white shark. While shark attacks are relatively rare, encounters do occur, particularly in areas where these apex predators hunt for prey. Florida's warm waters attract many species of sharks, and while great whites are not as common as in other regions, their presence is a sobering reminder to stay vigilant when swimming or surfing in the ocean. Number 4: Sinkholes Florida's unique geological makeup renders it susceptible to sinkholes, sudden depressions in the ground that can swallow up buildings, roads, and even entire neighborhoods. These sinkholes are typically caused by the dissolution of limestone bedrock, a process accelerated by factors such as heavy rainfall and groundwater depletion. Sinkhole occurrences are unpredictable and people have actually been swallowed up by them without warning. Number 5: Mosquito-Borne Diseases Florida's warm and humid climate provides the perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes, which are not only annoying pests but also carriers of various diseases. From West Nile virus to Zika virus and dengue fever, Florida residents face the threat of mosquito-borne illnesses year-round. Recently, Florida has been dealing with increased incidents of dengue fever and malaria as a result of mosquito bites. Keeping in line with bug bites, we have Number 6: Alpha Gal Syndrome Alpha-gal syndrome, also known as red meat allergy, is a relatively new and lesser-known health concern prevalent in Florida and other southeastern states. This allergic reaction to the alpha-gal carbohydrate found in mammalian meat is transmitted through the bite of the lone star tick, which is abundant in Florida's wooded and grassy areas. Individuals with alpha-gal syndrome can experience severe allergic reactions hours after consuming red meat or dairy products, making it a meat and dairy-lover’s worst nightmare. Number 7: Parasites and Barefoot Beach Walks As enticing as it may be to feel the warm sand between your toes, walking barefoot on Florida's beaches carries its own set of risks, including the potential for picking up parasites. Beach sand can harbor various microscopic organisms, including hookworm larvae and other parasites, which can penetrate the skin upon contact. These parasites can cause discomfort, infection, and even serious health issues if left untreated. Number 8: Brain-Eating Amoebas Amidst the allure of Florida's lakes and rivers lurks a microscopic menace: Naegleria fowleri, commonly known as the "brain-eating amoeba." Found in warm freshwater environments, such as lakes and hot springs, this amoeba can enter the body through the nose and travel to the brain, causing a rare but often fatal infection known as primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM). While cases are rare, the consequences of encountering this deadly amoeba are severe and since they thrive in warm freshwater, Florida is one of the top hotspots for encountering these amoebas. Number 9: Skin-Eating Vibrio Beneath the sparkling surface of Florida's coastal waters lies a less visible threat: Vibrio vulnificus, a bacterium capable of causing severe skin infections and life-threatening illnesses. Found in warm seawater, particularly during the summer months, Vibrio vulnificus can enter the body through open wounds or through the consumption of contaminated seafood. Infections can range from mild skin irritation to necrotizing fasciitis, a serious condition that can lead to tissue death and systemic illness. Practicing proper wound care and avoiding swimming in warm, brackish waters if you have open cuts or wounds can help reduce the risk of encountering this potentially dangerous bacterium. Number 10: The Dark Side of Disney: Deaths at the Happiest Place on Earth Despite its reputation as the "Happiest Place on Earth," Disney World has seen its fair share of tragic incidents resulting in fatalities over the years. From accidents on rides to medical emergencies and drownings in resort pools, the magic of Disney has been marred by these unfortunate events. While such occurrences are rare and Disney maintains stringent safety protocols, these incidents are a sobering reminder of the risks inherent in the bustling theme park environment.
