According to the weekly law enforcement report for February 9 through February 15, 2024 from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), a felon was arrested after being found on an illegal camping trip in Charlotte County. The report states that FWC Officer Josh Kampmann was patrolling the Babcock/Webb Wildlife Management Area when he located two subjects illegally camping. After making contact with the subjects, it was found that one was a felon with an active warrant out of Sarasota County. He was also found to be a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. The felon was arrested for the warrant and weapons violation. As of publication, the identities of the subjects have not been released to the public, and it is unclear exactly what charges the felon faces for his violations; however, according to Florida Statute 513.10, any person who maintains or operates a recreational camp without first obtaining a permit is guilty of a misdemeanor of the second degree. They may also be liable for a fine of up to $500 when the conviction is of a misdemeanor of the second degree as listed under Florida Statute 775.083 (e). Article by Rachael Volpe
