A recent incident in Lee County lead to the disposal of over 1,200lbs of mullet captured for human consumption due to contamination, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission report from December 15 through December 21, 2023. According to the release, a commercial fishing vessel returning from a fishing expedition was heavily laden with mullet. The individuals on board were spotted hastily grabbed ice in an apparent attempt to conceal the fish. Regulations mandate that food fish must be shielded from the elements and covered with ice during transportation. However, in this particular case, despite some fish being properly stored in a fish box with ice, approximately 1,200 pounds of mullet were discovered on the vessel's deck. The report stated that these fish were intermingled with various pieces of debris, fuel canisters, and other refuse. Compounding the violation, the individual in question was witnessed walking barefoot on top of the exposed fish. Due to the health risk imposed of the mullet for human consumption, law enforcement seized the contaminated fish for disposal. The responsible parties were cited for the observed violations.
