Deputies with the Marion County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) are asking for prayers and support following a shootout that has left one of their K-9s in need of intensive veterinary care. According to a statement on Instagram from MCSO, K-9 Leo was shot the morning of February 17, 2024 at approximately 9 am while assisting deputies with a call in the 900 block of NE 114th Court in Silver Springs. The call was in response to a situation involving a suspect accused of Battery by Strangulation. Police say the suspect was located in the backyard, where he began to initiate gunfire towards MCSO deputies, ultimately injuring K-9 Leo in the exchange; responding with necessary force, deputies returned fire, resulting in the apprehension of the suspect. The suspect was transferred to the hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. "Leo isn't just a member of our force; he's family. His loyalty, courage, and unwavering dedication to his duty embody the very essence of what it means to serve and protect. His sacrifice today reminds us of the dangers our deputies face each day to keep our community safe." said MCSO. K-9 Leo has been rushed to the UF Veterinary Hospital, where their dedicated team is doing everything possible to save him. MCSO asks the community to rally together to send love and prayers to K-9 Leo and his dedicated handler. As of publication, the identity of the suspect has not been revealed to the public. Further updates will come from the Public Affairs Office. Article by Rachael Volpe
