Mysterious Fish Mortalities in Florida Keys Spark Concern: FWC Launches Event Response Website

​In response to a concerning series of events involving abnormal fish behavior and the deaths of smalltooth sawfish in the Lower Keys, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has launched a new event response website. The site, updated weekly, aims to provide the public with the latest information on the Florida Keys Abnormal Fish Behavior Event.

The website, accessible at https://www.myfwc.com/spinningevent, serves as a central hub for information dissemination regarding the ongoing investigation into the mysterious occurrences.

According to FWC, the cause behind the abnormal behavior and the mortalities remains unknown. However, the commission is actively gathering samples and conducting analyses to shed light on the situation.

Public participation is crucial to the investigation. FWC emphasizes the importance of reporting any sightings related to the event. For sightings of smalltooth sawfish, whether healthy, sick, injured, or dead, individuals are urged to contact FWC's Sawfish Hotline at 1-844-4SAWFISH (1-844-472-9347) or via email at [email protected]. Reports should include pertinent details such as the date, time, and location of the encounter, estimated length of the sawfish, water depth, and any other relevant observations.

It is emphasized that under the Endangered Species Act, it is illegal to catch, harm, harass, or kill an endangered sawfish.

For concerns related to abnormal fish behavior, fish diseases, or fish kills, FWC encourages the public to submit reports to the Fish Kill Hotline. Reports can be made through the web form at MyFWC.com/ReportFishKill or by calling 800-636-0511.
