It is one thing to breed dogs and another to run something of a backyard puppy mill. On Friday, March 15, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) and the Union County Sheriff's Office reported that they partnered to remove dozens of adult dogs and puppies from a breeding operation in Providence, Florida. The Union County Sheriff’s Office was first on the case, responding to reports of the dogs’ mistreatment. The sheriff’s office then brought in the ASPCA to help manage the situation. Together and with Union County Animal Control, they were able to rescue approximately 120 dogs in total. Most of these dogs are Great Danes, but the ASPCA also says that they rescued other breeds, including Chinese Cresteds, English Bulldogs, and French Bulldogs. They were all found living in unsanitary conditions, and many of them were underweight and suffering from “untreated medical conditions”. At this time, the dogs have been relocated to an emergency shelter. They will undergo forensic examinations, receive medical and behavioral treatments, and be given enrichment. Seven other rescues have also partnered with the ASPCA, and FedEx has provided complimentary services to get vital resources to the emergency shelter. Animal cruelty charges are currently pending. The ASPCA reports that it is assisting police in the ongoing criminal investigation. Any resulting criminal charges will be handled by the Eighth Judicial Circuit State Attorney’s Office. Regarding this case, Union County Sheriff Brad Whitehead states that his office “has a proven track record of always taking animal cruelty seriously and it will not be tolerated…” In addition, ASPCA President & CEO Matt Bershadker says, “All dogs deserve proper care and a good quality of life, including those who are bred for sale…The ASPCA’s priority is to ensure the safety and well-being of animals nationwide, and we’re proud to work alongside the Union County Sheriff’s Office to protect these vulnerable dogs and provide them with the care they deserve.” Article by Ema Tibbetts
