Significant breakthrough made in 2021 Hillsborough County homicide investigation

Back in June of 2021, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office (HCSO) began investigations into a death that occurred in Thonotosassa; today, they make a significant breakthrough in the case with the arrest of a 32-year-old suspect, a release states.

According to the August 18 press release from the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Public Affairs Office, deputies were dispatched to the report of the body of a white adult male lying on the side of the road at approximately 6:30 am on Saturday, June 12, 2021. The case was quickly deemed a homicide, with detectives continuing to follow up on leads over the last 2 years.

Through a series of meticulous investigative efforts, detectives determined Phillip Stapleton, 32, was a possible suspect in two separate active homicide investigations. The evidence was used to make an arrest, taking Stapleton into custody earlier this week for his involvement in another murder that occurred in Seffner on July 20, 2023.

"Our dedicated detectives have displayed tireless determination in both of these investigations," said Sheriff Chad Chronister. "This shameless killer thought he could get away with murder on multiple occasions. His cold-blooded crimes end now. While nothing can fully heal the damage he has caused, I pray these victims' loved ones find comfort in knowing Stapleton will now have to answer for his actions."

Phillip Stapleton was taken into custody without incident in Pasco County on August 14, 2023. He is now facing additional charges, including First Degree Murder and Tampering with Evidence, alongside Principal to Murder in the First Degree and Conspiracy to Commit First Degree Murder.
