Weeki Wachee, easily one of the state's most popular springs, is undergoing some major changes. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has finalized the implementation of a Springs Protection Zone (SPZ) along the spring run of the Weeki Wachee River, spanning from the spring boil within Weeki Wachee State Park to the Rogers Park Boat Ramp. This decision, ratified at the July 2023 meeting, is a proactive measure aimed at preserving the ecological integrity of the river while maintaining public access. In close collaboration with Hernando County officials, the Southwest Florida Water Management District, and the Department of Environmental Protection, FWC Boating and Waterways staff conducted a comprehensive assessment to ascertain the necessity and viability of establishing the Springs Protection Zone. This process involved three public meetings, facilitating extensive community engagement and feedback. Subsequently, the FWC, DEP, Southwest Florida Water Management District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and U.S. Coast Guard collectively evaluated the available data and authorized the creation of the Springs Protection Zone. The Springs Protection Zone delineates a 5.61-mile stretch along the Weeki Wachee River, wherein vessel operators are prohibited from anchoring, mooring, beaching, or grounding vessels. It is important to note that, under Florida law, most tubes and rafts are not classified as vessels, with specific exemptions. Pursuant to Florida Statute 327.45, violation of the regulations within the Weeki Wachee River Springs Protection Zone may result in a fine of $140. The primary objective of this measure is to safeguard the ecological balance of the river while permitting recreational activities such as swimming, snorkeling, and rafting within designated areas. Visitors are strongly encouraged to adhere to conservation principles, including the avoidance of damage to vegetation, erosion of riverbanks, and littering.
