In a collaborative effort to stop street takeovers and racing meets, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office (HCSO) initiated the operation "Trick No Treats" on Friday, October 13, 2023, a press release states. According to the release, HCSO's Motor Unit, SID detectives, and our Street Crimes Unit worked alongside the Tampa Police Department to stop and arrest a large crowd of street takeover violators that had the intersection of North Obrien Street and West Laurel Street blocked off in all four directions of oncoming traffic. The operation resulted in the following actions:
Police say during one arrest, a ghost handgun was also found fully loaded. "Last night's operation vividly demonstrates the perils of illegal street takeovers, endangering not just the reckless participants, but also the innocent bystanders," said Sheriff Chad Chronister. "We will not stand for this type of menacing behavior in our county, which is why I am beyond proud of our team who all displayed extraordinary dedication, swiftly intervening to stop these illegal activities." The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office says they remain committed to ensuring all residents' roads are safe. If you see or know of a street-racing event, please contact (813) 247-8200.
