Anyone who is familiar with the coastlines along the Gulf knows that they're not exactly the best for "shelling" thanks to the usual lack of big waves; and unless you have a boat to get to an island (see my shelling tour review) you might feel like you're completely SOL. After all, where would the shells come from when you're working with this?
But before I digress too much, thankfully, there are a few beaches along the west coast of Florida --that you can drive to-- where shells are aplenty!
While you might find little ones here and there at most beaches, if you want to find some really nice, big, and intact ones, look no further than Boca Grande. This little island paradise is located only a short drive west of Fort Myers and offers visitors all the benefits of sailing to a remote island without the need for a boat!
Getting here is easy, and it's relatively cheap. There's a $2 fee to get onto the island via a toll booth, and it's $3 to park at the beach (and it's all day parking -baby!)
You will have no trouble finding a treasure trove of shells along the entire coastline here; however I will let you in on a little secret... If you drive all the way south, to area with the restaurant on the beach, the shells really pile in there. I never had such luck at a beach before than at this particular spot in Boca Grande. I picked up some rare snail and conch shells too, check out my haul below! READ ALSO: Devil's Den Prehistoric Spring: Should it be on your travel bucket list?
This was my first handful before I realized I was running out of hand space, so I went back to my car to grab my shelling bag:
With my bag handy, it was easier to sift through the mounds of clam shells to find this bad boy:
And this!
Since there was minimal foot traffic, most to of the large shells remained surprisingly intact.
But if you still need more proof...
And as if that isn't exciting enough for your shelling adventures, you'll be pleased to know you're only about an hour away from the shark tooth capital of the world! But if you plan on going there, be sure to have a seashell sifter with you.
