According to the weekly law enforcement report for February 9 through February 15, 2024 from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), two subjects have been arrested in Jefferson County for illegally digging for artifacts. The report states that FWC Officer Specialist W. Brooke and Officer L. Glover were on patrol in the Aucilla Wildlife Management Area when they found a vehicle parked in a secluded area; it was belived the individuals associated with the vehicle were digging for artifacts. Officer Glover contacted Lieutenant G Louque for assistance with locating the subjects. One subject was observed walking back to the vehicle covered in dirt; Officer Glover witnessed a second suspect actively digging for artifacts. The subject that walked back to the vehicle was found in possession of chert and two stone artifacts. Both subjects were arrested and transported to the Jefferson County Jail without incident. As of publication, the identities of the subjects have not been released to the public, nor is it clear exactly what charges the artifact-digging pair face; however, according to Florida Statute Section 267.13, excavating on state-owned lands without a permit is a felony of the third degree.
